    Thuraya Connects Loved ones
Thuraya created history in the small village of Khot in Pakistan, by becoming the first telephone ever used and seen by the villagers. Thuraya not only enchanted the people of Khot with its satellite telecommunication features, but won their hearts by enabling them to speak to their loved ones who lived thousands of miles away from Khot.

Misri Nan an old woman from Khot clutched the Thuraya phone happily as she spoke to her two sons in Bosnia; something she had never imagined would happen in her lifetime.

July 4, 2002 will be a day that the people of Khot would not forget for a long time to come- the day when Thuraya came into their lives. Khot is a small village in the remote Torkhow Valley of Chitral, the Pakistani District, bordering Afghanistan. In Khot, telecommunications is an unheard thing and the nearest telephone to be found is a one-hour drive from the village. So, when Thuraya was demonstrated to an awestruck crowd that had gathered in response to a banner

advertisement to witness the satellite phone demonstration, people found it hard to believe that the small cordless phone could enable you to talk to anyone in the world. The villagers finally decided that Misri Nan, the old woman whose sons are working in the Pakistan Mission in Bosnia was an ideal choice to test the phone.

As Thuraya’s salesman Ali held the Thuraya phone in the direction of the satellite to receive the signal and dialled the number in Bosnia, people flocked around him in stupefying silence. Misri Nana was full of excitement and nervousness as she spoke to her sons who were equally bewildered at hearing their mothers voice from Khot. This was the first telephone call she was making in her life and she wept as she spoke.

Soon, Thuraya’s salesman asked Misri Nan’s son to call him back on the Thuraya number, which he promptly did. The villagers clapped their hands in delight as Thuraya’s phone rang melodiously. This time around Misri Nan spoke more confidently to her sons on the Thuraya phone, talking about the rains, the damage to the water channel, the approaching harvest and about the hen that had died mysteriously and there was more than a mention about the man who had brought this magical gadget to the village. The old woman’s sons spoke to the Thuraya salesman and expressed their gratefulness. They wished to thank the Thuraya salesman by bringing him a gift for having done them such a huge favour; enabling their mother speak to them on the Thuraya phone from Khot.

Misri Nan overwhelmed with the whole experience treated the Thuraya salesman with home made tea in true Chitrali hospitality. With tears in her eyes, the old woman offered the Thuraya salesman, a cow that was her most precious possession for making her the first person in Khot to use the Thuraya phone. The Thuraya salesman politely declined the offer, but left the village with a heavy heart. He never knew that Thuraya could make such a difference in people’s lives.
